Recently, I embarked on an unforgettable adventure to the Nanzhila Plains in the southern region of Kafue National Park. This remote, unspoiled part of the park boasts access to the stunning Lake Itezhi-Tezhi, and our journey to reach it was an adventure in itself.

Starting in Livingstone, we drove north towards Kalomo, covering about 110km, before hitting the gravel road that leads to the Dundumwezi Gate of Kafue National Park. The 80 km stretch from Kalomo to the gate introduced us to the rugged beauty of Zambia's wilderness. From Dundumwezi Gate, it was another 150km to our accommodation at Musungwa Safari Lodge, a picturesque retreat overlooking Lake Itezhi-Tezhi. For the next three days, we enjoyed breathtaking sunsets from the lodge's deck, with the serene lake providing the perfect backdrop.

Kafue National Park didn’t disappoint in terms of wildlife either. Large herds of elephants and buffalo roamed the plains, along with the recently introduced red lechwe, now thriving in the park’s ecosystem. The highlight of my trip was undoubtedly spotting a majestic leopard perched on a rock, seemingly posing for us as we passed by.

One of the unique aspects of this area is the proximity to Lake Itezhi-Tezhi. We were able to take a boat trip on the lake, where we explored the dam up close, encountered hippos along the way, and watched the sun set behind silhouetted dead trees, casting an eerie yet beautiful scene.

Kafue National Park is vast and untamed, offering incredible solitude and outdoor space. You truly feel as though you have the entire wilderness to yourself. With its diverse landscapes, incredible wildlife, and serene waters, the park left a lasting impression. The Nanzhila Plains and Lake Itezhi-Tezhi are a must-visit for anyone seeking a genuine Zambian wilderness experience.
